movie review 3 idiots

With its basic plot derived from a best selling Indian book, director Raju Hirani couldn’t have asked for more. This man with brains is real smart. And combining himself with producer Vidhu Chopra is an icing on the cake. The duo have in the very recent past delivered two of the biggest hits Indian cinema has seen. An apt title coupled with some fine actors was enough to pull the crowds even more.

As was with the book (read Five Point Someone) the movie revolves around three main characters – Ranchoddas Chanchad aka Rancho (Aamir Khan), Farhan (Madhavan) and Raju Rastogi (Sharman). The movie begins about 10 years after the characters have finished their engineering. I can relate to their sorrow. I know how it is to become an engineer. The lead in the movie Rancho is lost somewhere and even after 10 years the other two friends do not know of his whereabouts. For a reason they set off to Shimla to search him. Shimla has been very beautifully captured. On their way to Shimla we have a flashback.

Cut to Imperial College of Engineering. Headed by a relentless dean played by Boman Irani (Viru Sahastrabudhhe – Virus), this college is where it all begins. The college flashback sequence takes you through some hilarious scenes. Most notable one being the balatkar speech made by this character Chatur Ramalingam (Omi). This newcomer playing Chatur is promising and makes an impact. Even Raju’s poverty and his paralysed father provide for a couple of laughs. Before we are forced to take a break for pop-corns we are left with a question that builds the other side of interval. Don’t go for this movie expecting the book to be replicated because you will be majorly surprised. Here we have suspense too, and you do not want me to reveal it.

As for me, the three lead characters with an engineering college are the only main things that have been borrowed from the book. A couple of other things like hospitalising Raju, Raju’s poor family remind you of the novel. Not to forget Bhagat never married his girlfriend from this book. Sob sob.

"scooter has more footage !"

Second half again juggles between present day and flashback. The two friends are still in search of their buddy Rancho and along the way they pick up his girlfriend Pia (Kareena) who was getting married on the same day. I knew this would happen. Anyways talking about Kareena she has been wasted as a pre-medical student who happens to be the dean’s daughter and falls for Rancho. You want to see more of her but are let down. How they end up finding Rancho brings us to the predictable climax.

Talking about the actors in the movie, as is known anything said about Aamir is always less because this perfectionist can play anyone or for that matter anything. He can convince you by playing a boulder. Because emotions talk. His role as Rancho takes you to his Dil Chahta Hai days where he played a 20-something, just that this time he looks younger ! Madhavan and Sharman have done their bits. They couldn’t have been better. As for Kareena we could have done without her. All the other vital roles have been played convincingly by polished actors, be it Boman playing the dean, Parikshit Sahni playing Farhan’s father or Mona Singh playing Pia’s sis.

Other important aspects for me include the music, lyrics and background score. Shantanu Moitra binds the scenes together but he has delivered better. His music is well complimented by Swanand Kirkire’s simple and sensible lyrics.

the idiots

But watching Hirani’s third movie will leave you with the same kind of feeling as was with his first two films because when it comes to the emotional scenes its signature Hirani. His films always have some new concept which he tries to repeat throughout the movie so that the audience remembers that once they are out of the cinema hall. The attempt to popularise jaadu ki jhappi through his debut did work as was with gandhigiri through his second movie, this time around it is all izz well. The philosophy is, no matter how fucked you are do not worry because all izz well.

And does the movie live up to all the expectations. Yes, it somewhat does. The 3 Idiots do end up charming you. Watch the movie for some good wholesome entertainment.

Bewafa 1952

This post has been pending for a long time!!! I’m so glad that I’m finally writing it.  It was Raj Kapoor’s birth anniversary on the 14th and  I somehow managed to watch this movie but didnt have time to review it.

Raj Kapoor’s films dealt with diversified subjects which sometimes involved teenage romance , sometimes oppression of women and sometimes (or most of the times) corruption in the society. And no doubt  that all the movies of his (at least the ones that I have watched so far) were superb (Anari, Awara, Shree 420, Jaagte Raho, Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai, Chhalia, Diwana to name a few). They had amazing actors, great story line, faboulous music and these are movies made to perfection (almost).  I like and respect Raj Kapoor as an actor and as a film-maker. But most of his movies are so socially awakening that they usually leave me morally (or should that be socially) depressed for days. Except for Chori Chori, I cant think of re-watching any of his other movies. And I usually have to prepare myself to bring myself to watch his movies.

After mentally preparing myself for more than a week I eventually watched this.

Roopa (Nargis) lives in a chawl with an alcoholic uncle (is that Siddiqui in the second screencap?).

He’s unemployed himself, sits at home and drinks the whole day. But he forces her to go out to work and earn money so that he can buy alcohol with it.

He mistreats her and literally beats her when she fails to get money. Everybody in the chawl is aware of Roopa’s fate. The children in the chawl enact the scene of Roopa’s uncle scolding her and punishing her on the streets where one becomes Roopa and another Roopa’s uncle. But it’s only Raj (Raj Kapoor), her neighbour who offers to help her. He even lends her some money when her uncle beats her and throws her out of the house saying she cant come back till she gets some money to buy alcohol for him.

Reluctantly she takes the money from him, unsure how and when she’ll be able to repay him. But he says he feels sorry for her for all that she has to go through and especially when he sees her dressed in rags. Also tells her that she doesn’t have to repay him. On a second thought he adds that she could come to his room and clean it up for him if she really wants to do something in return.

She feels so indebted that she lands up in his room the following morning to clean it. He is awed by her innocence and playfully sings Kaam haathon ka.

Her uncle keeps illtreating her so much that on one occasion when he throws her out of the house, she vows never to come back again and goes to kill herself.

But she realizes that she has never lived her life so she doesnt have the right to take it either (thankfully she realizes it on time and saves all the effort and trouble that hero would have to go through otherwise to save her;-))

Innocent and unexposed to the outside world she doesn’t know what to do or where to go. All that she knows is that she has to live and that she’s not returning back to the chawl. She just keeps walking aimlessly. Exhausted she sits under a street light, leans on the post and falls fast asleep.

She wakes up to find an artist’s easel infront of her.  And from behind the easel appears Ashok (Ashok Kumar), a painter who’s been making a portrait of her.

She’s scared first, then angry that he made her portrait without her consent. But when she sees the artist’s work and he promises to pay her Rs. 5 if she lets him complete it, she gives in. She agrees to be his model and accompanies him to his studio. He tries to make her sit in the same position and completes his painting.

And she…she’s more than happy to earn Rs. 5 for posing :-)

Ashok is not a very successful artist himself.  He’s been painting for a long time but nobody ever cares to buy any of his work. And very predictably she becomes his lucky mascot. Once he starts making her portraits he gets his recognition as an artist, his work becomes popular and people start buying his paintings for thousands.

In the meantime he also teaches her how to read and write.

To celebrate his success Ashok throws a big party and Roopa (who’s been living in his house all this house and quite rich and popular herself now through his paintings) is his co-host. She looks gorgeous as she accompanies him all dressed up for her first public appearance.

Ashok’s looking so good here that I can’t resist myself from putting up this one!

Party without a song sounds so incomplete….so here comes the song, and that too quite a catchy one O tana derna tana mere dil mein aa jana. I wonder who this pretty lady (the one singing the song) is. Since she was dancing the whole time, I couldn’t get a clearer screencap, will have to check memsaab’s gallery for her name.

It’s so obvious that Ashok is in love with Roopa that everybody at the party keeps asking Ashok when he’s getting married. After the party when everybody leaves Ashok tells Roopa about it.

Ashok : Everyone was asking me when I am getting married.

Roopa : You are getting married?

Ashok : Yeah, I think I should. What do you say?

Roopa : I think so too. (After a pause) So when’s the wedding?

Ashok : You should be the one to decide the date.

Roopa : Me? You could have done it yourself and just informed me.

Poor Ashok, Roopa doesnt figure out that he’s asking her to marry him!

All’s well till now, but that’s just the first 40 minutes of the movie. Now comes the twist in the story. Raj re-enters Roopa’s life. He sits outside the wall (of Roopa’s  house), under a tree singing Tumko fursat ho expecting her to come out after she hears his voice while Roopa is swimming inside. But she doesn’t. So he jumps the wall and gets in.

She’s delighted to see him. She gets him introduced to Ashok and also asks Raj to stay back for dinner.

After dinner he sings Dil matwala and I fell in love with this song instantly. And I guess so did Roopa because she gets up the following morning singing it herself  Dil matwala  (It’s the same song but tunes are different. Lata’s version is different from Talat’s).

The first time they meet Ashok senses that something’s wrong and doubts Raj’s intention. When he sees Raj trying to woo Roopa followed by Roopa’s inclination towards him, Ashok warns Roopa to stay away from Raj. But all his efforts to do so prove in vain. Roopa is no longer interested in sitting still and posing for Ashok’s paintings. Half the time she waits for Raj to come and when he shows up, she leaves Ashok and his incomplete painting and leaves with Raj.

He takes her to a club one night. And oh god Roopa looks so beautiful and innocent.

Here we are treated to this lovely number Aa jao mere dilruba by another lovely lady (whose name I am yet to figure out).

By the way, I kind of like her outfit!

Coming back to the story, Roopa and Raj get pretty late that night. And Ashok scolds Roopa for coming home so late. He also points out that Raj is interested in her wealth and not in her. At this she promises Ashok that she will never see Raj again. So when Raj comes to meet her the following day she sends a word through her maid saying she’s not at home. However, Raj sees her standing by the window seeing him leave. To convince her that his feelings for her are true, he sits almost all night singing Tu aaye na aaye teri khushi in the rain. This melts Roopa’s heart and she forgets all about her promise to Ashok.  She goes running to Raj and asks him to take her away with him.

He agrees to it and they fix a time. Raj is to come the following night at 10 and take her with him and go. Excited, she packs her things the whole day and is all set to leave. Ashok tries to convince her but she doesnt listen to him.  She goes outside the gate, sits on a bench and waits for Raj the whole night.

But unfortunately he doesnt turn up and she returns back home. Heart-broken and depressed she sings Ek baar jhalak dikhla ke hume . After a couple of days Raj turns up to apologize saying he’s extremely sorry that he couldn’t come that night to take her and begs her for one more chance. After a little bit of convincing she agrees. There’s nothing left for Ashok to say now. But Neela, her maid Neeli (Neelam)tells her that she’s making a mistake by trusting Raj again and pleads her not to go with him.

But Roopa has already made up her mind and this time Raj does come to take her.

She comes home later on to find this painting -

Now, why does Roopa come back home again? Why is Raj’s character so mysterious? Is he really after Roopa’s wealth or is it just Ashok’s jealousy trying to create misunderstandings between them? What stopped Raj from coming that night, the first time they decide to leave Ashok’s house? Is Ashok really as good as he appears to be? And finally the million dollar question – who’s bewafa? Who betrays whom?

Here, I take back my word – “Except for Chori Chori, I cant think of re-watching any of his other movies.” I wouldnt mind watching this movie again. What a power-packed performance, great songs (though I had never heard some of them before, I liked them a lot), and a good story with an apt title!

M.L. Anand’s direction, Akhtar Hussain’s story and  Sarshar Sailani

’s dialogues were neither below the mark nor over the board. Music by A.R. Qureshi was pleasant and melodious, songs perfectly rendered by Talat, Lata, Shamshad Begum and Geeta Dutt and in situations and place where you expect them the most.

I actually enjoyed watching this movie and wasn’t even depressed at the end of it (at least not as much as I had expected)! May be that’s because it’s more of an emotional drama than a social. It has its own share of fun moments, romance, jealousy, competition, poverty, failure, innocence and betrayal. I would call it a complete package. And to top it all, it’s just 1 hour 46 mins long or should I say it’s just 1 hour 46 mins short? ;-)

My Top Bollywood Movies of 2009

Just reading Rajeev Masands top 5 movies of 2009 made me write my own list. Here goes my list in order.

1) Dev D

Anurag Kashyaps rendition of Devdas proclaims the maturity of Indian cinema. It also reflects the maturity levels of Indian audience where the Hero always keeps rolling a joint or snorting cocaine. The movies main strengths were great performances from its lead actors and dialogues which were very much similar to those used in daily life. The music in itself was a great hit. I believe one of the greatest Hindi movies,

2) 3 Idiots

Though the topic could have been dealt with maturity the director chose not to and he achieved a great film according to his strong points. The aim was to make an entertainer and an entertainer this movie is. The performance was great by all three actors although the roles were not demanding like Dev D. It is the dialogues where this film scores and the dialogues are funny witty and mainly non slapstick. It is one of the rare non govinda genre comedy movie. Based on 5 point some one , this movie does not aim to carry any social message and is an all and all out entertainer.

3) Gulaal

Again a gem from Anurag Kashyap, the strength of this movie are its characters, the performance might not do justice for such great characters. The dialogues are crisp and inspiring. The character of Bana and Ranasa are greatly delineated. Another gripping aspect of this film is the way the songs are a part of the story line. The lyrics are great and the music is good. Piyush Mishra has added another dimension to this movie with Songs like “aarambh” and “Yaar Maula”. The intensity of each scene makes this film stand out.

4) Kaminey

Kaaminey is a very well shot movie with good camera work and a gripping screen play. The actors are mediocre and the roles were easy too. It was just a mixture of story line and shooting which made this movie a hit. If not for Vishal Bharadwaj there are very few directors who could have made Kaminey into what it is. Vishal Bhardwaj has carved good side roles like Bhope Bhau and the Bengalis who look believable and do much more than just augment the lead actors. The side roles have an impact on the story line. The music is apt and supports the movie well.

5) Paa

The movie is great just because of amazing direction by Balki. The story line had loopholes but Amitabh Bacchans acting does not let you notice it much. Vidya Balan comes out as an actress and not as a navel showing dancing lass (aka Katrina). Abhishek Bacchan did a very average job. The songs were very well shot and the director captures the intensity of the scenes by altering the location from greens to grey rooms. The music from illayraja is refreshingly different from the techno heavy music of these days. The music supports the movie very well. Balki and Amithabh Bachan share a very good chemistry also visible in Cheeni Kum.

The movies which missed out on this list but deserve a mention are Delhi 6, Whats your Rashee. I did not like Wake Up Sid, and did not watch De Dan Dhana Dhan. Kurban was good but did not have any thing extra and was run of the mill.

RS 5-LAKH THEFT AT FILM PUBLICIST & DIRECTOR FLYNN REMEDIOS' OFFICE

please note our new contact no is 09820094948

By Ashwin Salian – Futuristic Media Network

A major robbery took place at the office of Bollywood publicist, free lance journalist, scriptwriter and film director Flynn Remedios’ office in the wee hours of Wednesday morning. His video editor has been named as the main accused by the police.

According to a complaint filed by Flynn Remedios at the Versova police station on 9th December, he was working on some music video project and had hired the services of a free lance video editor Alok Singh to help him in the editing of the music video. The duo was working late night in the studio when Flynn Remedios decided to take a short nap. When he woke up after about 1.5 hours he found that two laptops, about 18 very expensive mobile phones, 5 pocket hard disks of varying capacities, his hand bag containing cash about Rs 40,000/- and various other belongings were missing including his wrist watch which he had left on the editing table. The video editor Alok Singh was not to be seen and the room had been literally wiped clean, except for the heavy desktop AVID and FCP machines.

He immediately called the police control room and a mobile police van reached the spot in about ten minutes. The Versova police have registered an FIR (FIR No 359/09) u/s 381 for theft and have named the absconding video editor Alok Singh as the main accused in the crime. The total value of the stolen physical goods is about Rs 5 lakh, but the value of the data and the freshly shot video footage would run into several lakh rupees, said Flynn Remedios, adding, “I trusted the man completely. Every day I would order his favorite biryani for dinner from a nearby restaurant. Even on Tuesday night, we had our dinner and I told him that I was going to sleep for an hour. I even told him to wake me up in short while as we had a shoot the next morning and had a call time of 7 am.  He has stolen my hard disks and about ten pen drives which had video footage worth several lakh rupees. I was working on two music videos and one film which I had directed. All the partly edited footage was stored on the portable hard disks. He should have at least left behind the hard disks which he knew had all the data.”

Let not Anu Malik go the RD Burman way!

RDB got his due only after He was gone

Anu Malik is still surviving the Bollywood ways. His comtemporaries singers of the 80’s and 90’s have either split or have been lost in oblivion. Remember – Nadeem-Shravan, Jatin – Lalit, Dilip Sen-Sameer Sen, Nikhil-Vina, Uttam Singh, Shiv-Hari, Anand-Milind. These were talented composers. But could not sustain themselves with the times. But Anu Malik is still there. But he seems to be loosing out on much-hyped and over-hyped music composers who no doubt will be YRF Films wonder or one film wonder.

Anu Malik is a man with immense passion and soul for music. His tunes string your heart. ‘Tere Dar per sanam chale aaye -from PTKYA’ , ‘Aane wala pal ek sapna hai – ‘, to’sau dard hain-Janemann’, ‘raat ki hatheli par chand jagmagata hai-Refugee’ to  ‘ labo ko labo-Lovestory 2050′  the last 30 years are exceptional and unmatchable…He has worked with Rafi to KK & can be called REAL versatile after RD Burman. Quite evident from his music,he continues to amaze listeners with his wide range of songs from Aawargi,Sohni Mahiwal,Jaanam,Sir,PTKYA,Baazigar,Vijaypath,Main Khiladi Tu Anari,Diljale,Chahat,Border,Tamanna,Virasat,Refugee,MKKH,Yaadein,Asoka,Jaaneman , Mein Hoon Na, Love story 2050, Victory, KI etc, which have become trend setters. He has given early breaks to many rookies who have now become singing sensation.Sonu,KK,Kunal,Preeti-Pinky,Babul,Alisha,Shreya,Zubin etc owe their success to him for early breaks during their struggling years. It has been his USP to give chart busters even without heavyweights.

The problem is like that like his soulful songs he take his decisions from his heart. He still poses trust on some banners who gave him work when he was nobody. Remember-Mard, Julie-Julie from Jeete hain shaan se. Wow. Often chided as a copy cat I am following Anu Malik since I started understanding Music. Phir Teri Kahani Yaad AAyi was the track that eventually gave Anu Mlaik status of God for me. I even hve his tracks from films like Gopala, Hum Hain Bemisaal- have you heard of these films! His tunes may be work of inspiration but they are full of Indian ethos. No wonder top-rated singer like Sonu Nigam dedicates their success to Anu.

I sometime regret that we Indian did not give RD Burman what he deserved during his lifetime. After his death he became real popular. Let this not happen to Anu Malik. Join us & raise a toast for the man!

And sing -sandese aate hain, humein tadpate hain…ki ghar kab aaoge’ OR ‘ter bin mein kuch bhi nahin -naraaz’…
