‘Dil Bole Hadippa’ is a bore

It was a beautiful Tuesday. The college was closed due to a strike by the hostellers. And I was fast asleep until I got a phone call from my friends. As I said ‘What’s the program?’, they told me that they were going for a movie and I had to reach there in 20 minutes. “20 minutes???” I was still in my bed and I had to get ready and reach there in 20 minutes! Anyway, I told them that I will reach there in time. So, they bought ticket for me too. I didn’t even care to ask which movie we were going to watch.

In about half an hour, I reached there and was shocked to find that they had bought tickets for the movie “Dil Bole Hadippa”. What a blasphemy! Actually the group consisted of more girls than boys, and the girls wanted to see this movie. Who would have convinced them to watch Wanted or What’s Your Rashee? in which I would have got to see at least 12 avatars of Priyanka. But here I was – watching Rani Mukherjee in a non-convincing role playing a boy Veer Pratap Singh.

The movie was a bore right away. There was no soul in the story. And Rani overdid everything. The emotions were superfluous. I feel so sorry for Shahid for being stuck in such a movie. To be honest, the movie should have been “Dil Bole So Jaa”.

The movie gave me a lesson. Ask your friends which movie you are going to watch before you leave from home.

Wake Up Sid

Wake Up Sid is the romantic comedy film starring Ranbir Kapoor and Konkana Sen Sharma in lead roles. Karan Johar produced this movie on his Dharma Productions banner. Ayan Mukherjee is going to made his Bollywood debut as director.

Karan Johar has produced this movie with 60crore huge budget. This movie success is very important to Ranbir Kapoor who failed to show any magic at Box Office with his first two movies Saawariya and Bachna Ae Haseeno.

Story revolves around the relation between an aimless guy Sid (Ranbir Kapoor) and a writer Aisha (Konkana Sen Sharma).

Music of this movie composed by Shankar -Ehsaan-Loy was a huge hit.

"Meri Ankhon Ki Neend Le Gaya"

It’s been a long time since I did a “songs stuck in my head” post, but this one would qualify perfectly. I’m just playing it over and over, especially for those sweet vocals by you-know-who… Actually, the whole Madhosh soundtrack, by Madan Mohan, is a very uplifting and catchy work (maybe not as deep or heavy as others that I’ve been listening to lately, but then I don’t think it’s meant to be). Usha Kiran’s acting and dancing in a couple of these songs is very charming also (though no doubt Meena Kumari was the main attraction in this film). I don’t know much about Usha Kiran, though she apparently acted in films for several decades. Anyway, I think I’ll put this movie on my list and pick it up sometime.

The highest paid comedians of 2009

Our ranking of the most valuable comedians is based on Forbes’ Star Currency survey. Conducted in fall 2008, the survey polled hundreds of entertainment industry professionals to rate 1,400 actors on critical financial metrics, such as their abilities to attract financing for films and drive box office revenues.

No 1. Adam Sandler

Age (as of April 10, 2009): 42

Star Currency Cumulative Score: 9.61 (out of 10)

Star Currency Ranking (Among Actors): No. 10

Star Currency Ranking (Among All Actors/Actresses): No.12

Hollywood’s most desirable funnyman has a long track record of leading silly but profitable comedies, like Big Daddy, Happy Gilmore and The Waterboy. Sandler has also flexed his serious chops in 2002’s Punch Drunk Love and 2004’s Spanglish. His much anticipated Funny People, in which Sandler plays a successful Hollywood comedian diagnosed with cancer, should provide another opportunity to blend humor and humanity.

No 2. Will Ferrell

Age (as of April 10, 2009): 41

Star Currency Cumulative Score: 9.56 (out of 10)

Star Currency Ranking (Among Actors): No. 13

Star Currency Ranking (Among All Actors/Actresses): No. 15

One of Hollywood’s hottest comedic talents, Ferrell is putting his touch on film, television (HBO’s Eastbound and Down) and the emerging world of Web video (Funnyordie.com). Ferrell recently took to the Broadway stage to satirize former President George W. Bush in a controversial one-man show.

No. 3. Ben Stiller(my fav.)

Age (as of April 10, 2009): 43

Star Currency Cumulative Score: 9.50 (out of 10)

Star Currency Ranking (Among Actors): No. 15

Star Currency Ranking (Among All Actors/Actresses): No. 18

Born to comedian parents, Stiller broke into show business on Broadway and later produced well-regarded but little-watched comedy shows for MTV and Fox. He soon branched out into directing (Reality Bites, The Cable Guy), but developed into an economic force in Hollywood after taking starring roles in There’s Something About Mary and Meet the Parents. That film, along with its sequel, Meet the Fockers, grossed $850 million at box offices worldwide.

No. 4. Jim Carrey

Age (as of April 10, 2009): 47

Star Currency Cumulative Score: 9.42 (out of 10)

Star Currency Ranking (Among Actors): No. 16

Star Currency Ranking (Among All Actors/Actresses): No. 19

Canadian comic won Hollywood stardom with 1994’s Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. Carrey has since proven himself as a crowd-pleasing funnyman in sophomoric flicks like Dumb and Dumber and Liar Liar, and earned respect as a serious actor in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Man on the Moon. Controversial new flick I Love You, Philip Morris, starring Carrey and Ewan McGregor as prison lovers, premiered at Sundance in January but has yet to find a theatrical distributor.

No. 5. Vince Vaughn

Age (as of April 10, 2009): 39

Star Currency Cumulative Score: 8.39 (out of 10)

Star Currency Ranking (Among Actors): No. 28

Star Currency Ranking (Among All Actors/Actresses): No. 32

Chicago-bred funnyman had his breakout role as a wannabe Hollywood player in 1996’s Swingers. Later took on dramatic roles in Psycho remake and Domestic Disturbance. His career has been reignited by collaborations with fellow Bankable comedian listers Ferrell and Stiller in Old School, Starsky and Hutch, and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.

No. 6. Steve Carell

Age (as of April 10, 2009): 46

Star Currency Cumulative Score: 8.05 (out of 10)

Star Currency Ranking (Among Actors): No. 31

Star Currency Ranking (Among All Actors/Actresses): No. 36

Now one of Hollywood’s most desired comedic talents, Carell says he once considered a career as a mailman and attorney. Good thing he opted for comedy. Films led by the ex-Daily Show correspondent have garnered both nods from critics and huge box office revenues. Among his successes: 40 Year Old Virgin and Anchorman.

No. 7. Eddie Murphy

Age (as of April 10, 2009): 48

Star Currency Cumulative Score: 7.66 (out of 10)

Star Currency Ranking (Among Actors): No. 37

Star Currency Ranking (Among All Actors/Actresses): No. 49

Murphy launched his career with a raunchy stand-up routine but has recently been collecting huge paychecks for his work on movies aimed at kids. His turn as oddball Donkey in Dreamworks’ Shrek series has helped generate $2.2 billion in world box office revenue. The SNL alum also carried successful comedies Dr. Doolittle and The Nutty Professor, as well as appeared in a dramatic role in 2006’s critically acclaimed Dreamgirls.

No. 8. Sacha Baron Cohen

Age (as of April 10, 2009): 37

Star Currency Cumulative Score: 7.64 (out of 10)

Star Currency Ranking (Among Actors): No. 38

Star Currency Ranking (Among All Actors/Actresses): No. 50

The Cambridge-educated comedian got his start in university productions of Fiddler on the Roof. Baron Cohen’s career took off after creating the character Ali G, a moronic television interviewer, for a British sketch show. That personality inspired an HBO series, which in turn led to the hugely successful film Borat ($261 million worldwide gross), a faux documentary featuring Baron Cohen as an awkward Kazakhastani journalist touring the U.S. He stars as a flamboyant Austrian fashion reporter in the highly anticipated Bruno, which hits theaters in May 2009.

No. 9. Jack Black

Age (as of April 10, 2009): 39

Star Currency Cumulative Score: 7.60 (out of 10)

Star Currency Ranking (Among Actors): No. 40

Star Currency Ranking (Among All Actors/Actresses): No. 53

Show biz lifer made a few bucks as a teenager starring in a 1982 Activision videogame commercial. His breakout role came 18 years later as pompous record store clerk in High Fidelity with John Cusack. During a 2009 Oscars presentation, Black joked that he made much more money for animated work (Kung Fu Panda, Shark Talk) than live action flicks (King Kong, Tropic Thunder).

No. 10. Robin Williams

Age (as of April 10, 2009): 57

Star Currency Cumulative Score: 7.45 (out of 10)

Star Currency Ranking (Among Actors): No. 65

Star Currency Ranking (Among All Actors/Actresses): No. 48

Williams launched his career as a wacky alien in NBC’s Mork & Mindy in the 1970s. He later honed his comedy chops as a stand-up and went on to star in big-grossing comedies: The Birdcage ($185 million worldwide gross) and Mrs. Doubtfire ($219 million). He won acclaim for his dramatic work, as well, including an Oscar in 1998 for his role as a sympathetic but tormented psychologist in Good Will Hunting.

Salman's wanted a Hit in single screen theatres in India

Bollywood actor Salman Khan’s latest action movie “Wanted” didn’t get favourable reviews from the critics but has done good business by earning about Rs.38 crore across the country in its first week.

Surprisingly, it is the single screens where the movie has fared well compared to the multiplexes by generating 70 percent business.

“Till now, we had undermined the business contributed by the single screen theaters, but this film has made us realise that such theatres are still the bosses,” said trade analyst Taran Adarsh.

http://www.monadarling.com/lifestyle/salmans-wanted.html

Said another trade analyst: “Single screen theaters have been historically known to cater to testosterone boosting movies- action dramas. ‘Wanted’ is exactly that kind of film. Then you have the price of the tickets, approximately less than half that of multiplexes, with the advantage of watching it on a 70mm screen. Quite naturally, audiences will choose single screens over multiplexes,” he added.

When did women start working?

I don’t quite get it when somebody says working women are modern women. Women have always been working. Throughout history.

In many parts of India, a girl’s good health was a consideration when selecting a bride because she was one more hand working in the fields and tending to the cattle, apart from regular housework like fetching water, washing clothes at the river banks, grinding, cooking, raising many babies etc.

The mothers often had to get back to work soon after a delivery. (One hears of babies delivered in fields, mother back to work the next day).

The babies were left in hammocks on trees (etc), older children looked after the little ones, the kids played in big groups, they got hurt, fell ill, drowned in rivers and fell into wells (still do), were picked up by wild animals and died of snake bites.

Mortality rate was high. Many babies died, many mothers died too. There were no Day Care Centers like we have today. Women felt privileged if they could afford not to work.

Nobody thought these women should not work. Their neglected babies and families did not become a topic of discussion, when it came to working-women gender roles were not rigidly defined or followed.  Why?

Their work did not threaten the established norms, because they did not earn anything. They worked hard, but they were not independent.

Problems started only when they started getting their own money. It gave them the power to fight back against injustice.

Bollywood generally has working women who leave their babies ‘burning in high fever’ at home, but Mother India and Rihayi have a more realistic examples of working women.

Mirch Masala, my favorite, has suspense, drama, romance, lots of working women, women-bonding and a surprise ending! Have you seen the movie? Take a look !

Do Raaste (1969)

I was going to finish this earlier this week but I just never got to it. It wasn’t nearly as long as I thought it was going to be. I expected it to take me a couple more lunches to finish it, but I had about 20 minutes left of my lunch where I got to watch all the terrible previews for other films, but even then I got to sit around for a few minutes with nothing to do.

A struggling family is split apart when the middle son (Prem Chopra) marries a rich young modern woman (Bindu). Meanwhile, the youngest son (Rajesh Khanna) falls for her sister (Mumtaz).

I bought this film because I’ve only seen Rajesh Khanna in Anand (1970) and his five minute bit in the Shammi Kapoor/Hema Malini starrer Andaz (1971). Another reason for buying it was because I’ve only ever seen Mumtaz in Brahmachari (1968).

While Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz are credited first, and they got a fair bit of screentime – the film wasn’t really much about them. I’d have to say that the real stars of the film were Balraj Sahni, Prem Chopra, and Bindu. The older step-brother (Navendru), the middle brother (Birju), and the evil sister-in-law (Neela).

Navendru gave up pretty much everything so his step-brothers (Birju and Satyan – played by Rajesh Khanna) could get an education and make a name for themselves. Things go to hell when rich and modern Neela marries Birju and takes over the household. She gets rid of all their old furniture, puts up modern art, and treats all her in-laws as servants. Mumtaz played Reena the lovely (and FIERCE) younger sister. The complete opposite of her sister.

It was a melodramatic family drama. I enjoyed it. Like my boss said after I explained the plot to him, “Uhh… That’s… *laughs* That sounds like an award winner.” But I enjoyed it because I don’t mind the melodrama.

Mumtaz and Bindu were the super high points of the film for me. Mumtaz was fierce, yet really sweet. Bindu was such a bitch that I wanted to reach into the screen and bitchslap her myself. She was convincingly evil!

Because I watched this on my portable DVD player over a few lunches at work, and because I’m lazy and this is my blog – I don’t have caps to share.

I do, however, have an awesome animation of Mumtaz being awesome – beware that the animation is a little over 3mbs.

Mumtaz’s fierce and awesome was quite prominent in the first half hour of the film. After that, of course, she realized that Rajesh was actually a nice guy, and decided to stop slapping and drowning him. I was a little sad, to be honest. I wanted the film to be about this fierce gal played by Mumtaz and this odd duck played by Rajesh Khanna. An open call here for films that fit the bill! Anyone?

There weren’t really that much for songs, but this one was my favorite:

Along with this one where Mumtaz gets to plot against Rajesh who is trying to woo her:

And this fun one:

It wasn’t exactly what I thought it was, but I did enjoy it.

Patthar ke Phool

I have never been Salman Khan fan. Okay, I did like the innocent boy in “Mere Rang me rangnewali”.

But that’s end of it. Despite that I did watch many of his movies. Even those that performed  average ones. The movies where SP was singing for Salman !!

In fact I feel he looks much more matured and decent these days compared to his young days. A lot of people from Bollywood fraternity swear by his friendship and how good he is. He indeed sounded good on Farah’s Tere Mere Bich Mein talk show. Recently CID did promo of his upcoming movie “wanted”. Not sure I am gonna watch it.

Other day I happen to listen to this one tune on TV; which sounded terribly familiar. It kept on playing in my head for a while not able to recall where it was from originally. After listening it 2-3 times; the tube light was on. It was from this Salmaan’s song from movie “Love”. The song  ”Sathiya tune kya kaha”. A friend of mine told me the background behind this song. That he will ask Revati whose name is “maggi” in the movie and he forgots about her until he happens to see the Maggi Sauce bottle. And then he rushes back and there it comes this song. The days when hormones work in full swing ; this background was enough to love the song.

Another less famous song from the same movie. Oh I knew the lyrics of this one as well !

One day I happen to see this Auto-Rick fella playing “Dus ka Dum”. Obviously he being Salmaan’s fan; he sang one of his favorite song. A song which I heard after ages. Today I feel it is typical Lorry-Auto wala type of song. But hey wait I have seen the movie in theatre then.  Okay go an have a laugh.  Let me join you too !  From Patthar ke Phool

Few of other Salaman songs that make laugh out loud has to be

1. aayi main aayi – Salman and ayesh jhulka

2. chudi maza na degi

Then there were loads of them The great big fat indian wedding movies ( read Rajshri movies); Saajan,Baagi, Karan – Arjun. But at the same time one can not forget that these songs happen to be hit then. One movie I completely skipped watching was Himesh Bhai’s musical hit “Tere Naam”. Too much of emotion for my taste.

One movie where I was completely biased about character played by Salman has to be “hum dil de chuke sanam”. Lovely movie and lovely songs. After all it was a SLB movie.

and yet I still like some of his old songs. A top favorite of mine ; even today has to be “aate jaate” from MPK.

then there is “aankho ki gustakiyan” . I think the couple absolutely rocked this song. what do you say ?

So bring on your love-hate songs. Dig the pages of past and let’s roll the laughs. Game ?

Tum mile- Tum Mile

Khawabon Bina Nigahein Meri Jee Rahi Thi Koi Nahi Tha Yeh Akeli Thi Meri Zindagi Khamosh Tha Hothon Pe Baaat Nahi Thi Koi Nahi Tha Yeh Akeli Thi Meri Zindagi

Tum Mile To Mil Gaya Yeh Jahan Tum Mile To Har Pal Hai Naya Tum Mile To Saab Se Hai Fasla Tum Mile To Jadoo Chaa Gaya Tum Mile To Jeena Aa Gaya Tum Mile To Maine Paaya Hai Khuda

Palkein Mundein Chahat Meri So Rahi Thi Khushboo Hawaon Mene Thi Mene Nahi Mehsoos Ki Jane Kahan Bahrein Meri Khil Rahi Thi Khushboo Hawaon Mene Thi Maine Nahi Mehsoos Ki

Tum Mile To Mehki Barishe Tum Mile Jaagi Khwaishe Tum Mile To Rangoon Ka Hai Silsila Tum Mile To Jadoo Chaa Gaya Tum Mile To Jeena Aa Gaya Tum Mile To Maine Paaya Hai Khuda

Tune Duyain Suni Dil Ki Sadyein Suni Tujhse Mein Maungu Aur Kya Tujh Bin Adhura Hoon Main Tere Sang Pura Hoon Main Karta Hoon Tera Shukriya

Kaise Kahon… Kaise Kahoon

Kaise Kahon Lamhein Mujhe Choo Rahein Hain Aisa Laga Hai In mein Tera Hi To Eshaas To Hai Kaise Kahon Dil Mein Nayi Aahtein Hai Aisa Laga Hai Inmein Tera Hi To Eshaas To Hai

Tum Mile To Mera Dil Gaya Tum Mile To Sab Kuch Mil Gaya Tum Mile To Logoon Se Kya Vasta Tum Mile To Jadoo Chaa Gaya Tum Mile To Jeena Aa Gaya Tum Mile To Maine Paaya Hai Khuda

Bollywood classics on Channel Four (Sept-Oct 2009)

Film poster for Mahal (1949)

Indian cinema has again returned to UK television as Channel Four kicks off another season of Bollywood films.

For the last 28 years the channel has provided a masala mix of Indian films from Mumbai and beyond. This time around it’s a 12 film season focused on early Bollywood classics.

It kicked off last week with the first two films, but before that the scene was set with The Golden Years of Indian Cinema, a 75-minute special from Movie Mahal, the Indian cinema series from the late 1980s.

As Channel Four put it in the press release to accompany Movie Mahal:

“The programme provides an insight into the glorious years of Hindi cinema from the late 1940s to the early 1960s. Concentrating on songs, singers, composers and lyricists, there are interviews with key film personalities Lata Mangeshkar, Helen, Javed Akhtar and Gulzar as well as archive footage featuring songwriters and singers Talat Mahmood, Majrooh Sultanpuri and Laxmikant.

“It also looks at the work of actors like  Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand and Amitabh Bachchan. Despite the tremendous increase in production and far wider reach of what is called ‘Bollywood’ today, The Golden Years of Indian Cinema shows the enduring impact of the 1950s, the decade in which great masters of Indian film started making world-class cinema.”

The films being aired  – in the usual insomniac-friendly slots reserved for Indian cinema – are:

• Mother India – aired Monday 6 September, 02:15-05:15

• Andaaz – aired Tuesday 7 September, 00:45-03:25

• Mahal – Monday 14 September, 01:10-03:40

• Mr & Mrs ‘55 – Tuesday 15 September, 12:45-03:20

• Pyaasa – Monday 21 September

• Madhumati – Tuesday 22 September

• Awaara – Monday 28 September

• Shree 420 – Tuesday 29 September

• Junglee – Monday 5 October

• Mere Mehboob -Tuesday 6 October

• Gunja Jumna – Monday 11 October

• Sholay – Tuesday 12 October

I’m not sure if the last film on the list will be Shole (1953) or the more famous Sholay (1975), the former seems possible given the release dates of the other films. If so, perhaps the latter will be shown in a future 1970s/80s retrospective.

Films will be shown very early in the morning on the dates given above – i.e. set your recorders the day before or you’ll miss them.

Shah Rukh Khan wash-drinks his Wife Gauri's Feet Every Morning

Shah Rukh Khan wash-drinks his Wife Gauri’s Feet Every Morning Mumbai: You must have heard about women washing their husbands’ feet and drink that water as part of the old-age tradition in Indian Hindu society. That is history now, as modern women are no longer willing to do that. Forget about women, can you even imagine that a man do that for his wife. If you say it’s impossible, just eat your words. Your own Bollywood Badshah Shah Rukh Khan washes his wife Gauri’s feet every morning and drink that water to prove his loyalty. Shah Rukh Khan revealed this on the chat show, ‘Tere Mere Beach Mein’ hosted by Farah Khan. SRK felt no shame to admit that he washes his wife’s feet and drink that water every morning to thank her for being a part of his life. SRK also virtually admitted that he is a henpecked husband (Joru Ka Ghulam), when he said he wanted to be a dominated husband.

The chat show is aired at Star Plus on every Saturday and Sunday at 9 PM. This seven-week series comprises of 14 episodes. It allows TV viewers in India to know more about the real life of a celebrity.

ALL SONGS

Wow. Whenever I find myself watching allegedly show stopping choreography in new Hindi films which style themselves as fantasies, this sense of total boredom always creeps in at the sheer unimaginative nature of the dance routines. They’re ubiquitous of course. Everyone prances about like their fresh from the Brian Rogers Dance Connection on Seaside Special, same kicks, same cutaways, the lot.

And then I saw Navrang on satellite. Wow. This is a truly fantastical film. It looks genuinely unearthly. The plot: 19th Century sage/poet/artistic type Divakar (Mahipal, looking uncannily like William L Petersen circa Manhunter) has lost his muse. This is a time of British Imperial rule (boo), but there’s no overt agenda here. It’s a simple story via which Divakar starts to be tormented by his artists’ block. This is where Sandhya comes in. In a dual role of his beloved and his muse she performs some gob smacking classically inspired pieces. There’s this scene where she’s performing a Kathak style routine, balancing about 10 water pots on her head, she even bends down whilst balancing them on her head (no strings). There’s fantasy set pieces that are simply beautiful too, notably the piece where she’s in the temple, and it morphs into a whole white-out room full of giant temple bells, each with a dancer on the ringer, swaying to the music. This is up there with the glorious surreal set designs of some of the Hollywood musicals of the 30’s, and the Powwll & Pressburger film “The Red Shoes” in terms of real skill on display. They make it all look so simple too.

Ganpati, and much, much more.

Last week marked the end of the Ganesh Chaturthi, a 10-day Hindu festival celebrated all throughout India. On the last day of the festival, Viviane and I took to the streets to celebrate. All throughout Bombay were hundreds of processions like these, where people dance around the giant plaster idols of Ganesh. (I’d actually seen them being made before at the Colaba Market – there was this huge room filled with dozens of these gigantic sculptures in the process of being painted.) Each procession slowly (VERY slowly) makes its way to the sea, where the idols are ceremoniously submerged in the water. Viviane and I only saw the smaller idols being submerged along Gita Nagar because dancing in this procession got tiring after the first half-hour or so of getting virtually nowhere. We met these cute little kids who ushered us right on in to the dancing. A group of women came over and started dancing with us almost immediately, and smeared this red powder on our faces (which is as AWESOME as it is difficult to wash off, haha). Indian hospitality is amazing (: Also, strange men kept taking pictures of us . . . haha. This is a view from Marine Drive of Chowpatty beach, where the biggest crowds gather for the submersions. We didn’t end up going there because we didn’t want to get trapped forever and we were already tired . .. but hey, it’s all the more of a reason to come back next year (: The next day, we went to Juhu Beach to participate in one of Rotaract Club of Mithibai College’s community service events – a beach-cleaning drive. Juhu (along with all the other beaches of Bombay) was absolutely COVERED in trash and bits of plaster elephant god. The Ganesh Festival is hell on the environment, but it’s part of the culture, and people are definitely willing to help clean it up, as there were dozens of community service groups along the beach that day. Here’s an article about the event: http://www.bindass.com/post/beach-cleaning-drive-rcnm/ Me with some of the exchange students and Rotaractors who attended the event. The group! All of the beach-cleanup pictures were taken by Disha Jain, one of the Rotaractors. By the way, did I mention that WE WERE INTERVIEWED BY MTV? I’m supposed to be on television tomorrow at noon (: Right after the event, I hung out with my friend Archit, since he lives right in Juhu. We saw my first Hindi movie in theatres – Kaminey (Hindi for “bastards/scoundrels”) – which he so graciously translated for me. Luckily, it was filled with lots of explosions, so despite not really understanding it, I was very much entertained. And I really do not mind staring at Shahid Kapoor’s face for two hours, even if it’s in total incomprehension. Gotta love Bollywood. I ALSO really love how most films here are based in Bombay. It’s really cool to see the city you’re living in portrayed on the screen. It must be awesome to have grown up somewhere that people actually make art about. The next day, my wonderful counselor, Razia, invited me to an Indian wedding reception at the Sahara Star. It was only the reception, so no singing and dancing, but it was still great to get to wear Indian clothes and eat glorious gourmet Indian food. I loved looking at everyone’s saris (: The hotel itself was absolutely RIDICULOUS. I’ve never been anywhere ritzier in my entire life. They had pyrotechnics and laser shows over this huge pool. And did I mention that the food was GLORIOUS? My god. I ate so much. I figured I’d never get a chance to eat food that ritzy again, so I really seized the day there. The bride and groom also had these gigantic magazine-quality photographs of themselves draped everywhere . … Definitely the most lavish party I’ve ever been to. If I get married, it won’t be in India, because I don’t think my wallet could EVER recover. A couple days after that, Elfi, Joia, Viviane, Carmen and I attended the Fresher’s Party (for Rotaract Club of Jai Hind members) at the Red Light club in Kala Ghoda. Sooooo much fun. Before I had thought that clubbing was just a bunch of young people acting carnal in order to desperately feel like adults . .. which is kind of dead-on, but it’s also FUN as SHIT. I’d never actually been out dancing before, so this was definitely a crash course on the matter, because at one point all of us exchange students were dancing on the table, haha. If I wasn’t an extrovert before I came to India, I am one now. Luckily I knew all of the songs because my host sister, Dipti, plays them all the time. Also, it turns out I’m actually going to college now! Perish the thought! And still . .. I don’t really attend unless I particularly want to, haha. The first lecture I saw was Hindi . . . taught completely in Hindi . . . so I didn’t really learn much. HOWEVER, I made friends right away with some girls from my class – Ruhi, Rudri, Nilofer, Numena, Radhika, and Benaaz, and they promptly taught me how to swear in Hindi. So far I’ve learned much more from them than I’ve learned in school. We bunked the next lecture and went to Mocha for shisha. That was two days ago, and since then I’ve only attended one other lecture, Philosophy, which I was 15 minutes late for. I wish I could say that it was interesting . . . but it really wasn’t. It was mostly all stuff you could discuss freely with any willing stoner friend back home. I was kind of hoping it would be about specific philosophers and schools of thought, but nope. The lecture after that had been cancelled, and then today, BOTH my History and Poli Sci lectures were cancelled, because the teachers neglected to show up for school. Sigh.

Bollywood Grill

Bollywood Grill

It’s hard to know where to start with this one. I shouldn’t like the place, but I do. Located at 6840 W. Sahara in a remodeled 60’s diner, the Bollywood Grill serves up some very good North & South Indian fare. The service leaves a lot to be desired, but the flat screen TV screens dotting the interior kept us amused with Bollywood movie trailers as we waited a very, very long time for our food to arrive even though we were there midweek and there were only a few other diners.  But our samosa appetizers were served with 2 very good chutneys and we soon forgot about the excessive wait. Our chicken tandoori and lamb palak(lamb cooked in a creamed spinach curry) were as good as any we’ve eaten. The rice, yellow with saffron, was very nice but we thought it odd that it wasn’t included with the price of our entrée and had to be ordered separately. Our naan bread was also not included with our entrée but was worth the extra price. Made in house, it was outstanding. The menu features a variety of other classic Indian dishes, breads and deserts that are all made in house.   The sweets are on display near the front entrance and can be purchased to go on the way out. All meats used are Halal.  Prices are on the high side for the size of the portions but the quality somewhat made up for that. We plan a return trip to sample the lunch-time buffet and give the slow service issue a second chance. Dinner for two, including beverage was $65 plus tip

What stars has to say for Preity Zinta

Preity Zinta was born on January 31, 1975. Preity made her acting debut in Dil Se in 1998. After that, the perky girl never looked back. She went on to sign big-banner films opposite some of the most famous leading men in Bollywood.

The actress was also linked with model Marc Robinson for a year. After a few more supposed link-ups with stars, Preity Zinta met the dashing entrepreneur Ness Wadia at a party hosted by their common friend Shahrukh Khan.

Their relationship took off in 2005 and became the made-for-each-other duo. Talking about the astrological observations Preity’s surya kundli, Rahu is transiting over natal Sun and Ketu is transiting through the 7th house which is the main reason for her split with Ness.

Venus, Jupiter and retrograde Mercury are placed in Aquarius. Preity has already entered the Jupiter return phase but in mid-July 2009, a transiting Jupiter becomes retrograde and will be back in Capricorn on 31st July, 2009.

The Natal Venus is strongly linked with natural benefic Jupiter which indicates that the actress could be lucky in relationships, and that whatever has happened is due to adverse planetary transits.

When Jupiter will enter Aquarius again on 20th December, 2009, there will be a great indication for Preity’s love life for two reasons. One, because Jupiter’s return phase, at times, also brings back that which has been lost. Secondly, this phase offers much wisdom and many opportunities that one can avail. Preity gonna be lucky.

The period between 19th December, 2009 and 2nd May 2010 is important for Preity’s love life, and she may find herself in a very desirable relationship during that period.

Let’s wait and watch whether it is Ness who will return in the lady’s life or simply someone else! Good luck and may Lord bless Preity Zinta !

Do Ankhen Barah Haath (1957)

I heard about this film from IndiaTimes list of 25 Must See Bollywood Movies (for the record, I’ve now seen seventeen of out twenty-five).

Directed by, and starring V. Shantaram, Do Ankhen Barah Haath is based off a true story of a young jailer who takes six convicted murderers into the country to barren land where they transform from cold-hearted murderers to honest farmers.

I think that 1957 was to Bollywood as 1939 was to Hollywood. In 1939 Hollywood had Gone with the Wind, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and The Wizard of Oz as big name memorable films. Bollywood in 1957 had Mother India, Pyaasa, and Do Ankhen Barah Haath.

After thinking it over, I realized that Do Ankhen Barah Haath and Mother India are polar opposites.

Mother India stars Nargis, Raj Kumar, and Sunil Dutt. After a husband becomes disabled and abandons his family, a mother raises her two sons through hardships. In the end she is forced to kill one of her sons after he is deemed irreversibly corrupt.

Do Ankhen Barah Haath – based on a true story – has an idealistic young jailer who sets out to turn six hardened criminals into honest farmers.

I think it’s quite fascinating how in the same year there could be two films with such radically different views on the topic of criminals. Mother India sees criminals as irreversibly corrupt and better off dead, while Do Ankhen Barah Haath shows how even in the worst of criminals there is a bit of humanity left. They can be saved and made into productive members of society.

I was greatly moved by Do Ankhen Barah Haath. About eleven minutes in I was on the verge of tears. The ending, I admit, is quite filmi and melodramatic, but touching nonetheless.

Screencaps and some overview ahead…

The title of the film – Do Ankhen Barah Haath – literally translates as ‘Two Eyes Twelve Hands’, obvious really – one jailer, six murderers.

We start out Do Ankhen Barah Haath in the place you’d think – a jail.

The warden treats the criminals as sub-humans. He abuses him with his stick and shiny shoes.

In one of the offices, an inmate (Kisan) cleans the floor. Spotting a knife, he grabs it when the jailer gets out of his chair. He lunges…

The jailer (Adnath) is quick. He struggles, but instead of reaching for his stick, he reaches for a bell to call in help.

Adnath hands Kisan the piece of paper he was working on.

Kisan begs Adnath to forgive him and thanks him for listening to him.

He feels for Kisan and doesn’t want this incident to ruin his chances of seeing his children.

Adnath has plans to take some of the worst murderers in the jail and reform them by having them work some land out in the country. The warden doesn’t have any faith in Adnath’s experiment.

He reluctantly informs Adnath that his experiment has been approved by a higher authority. Adnath picks his inmates, insisting that Kisan be one of the six.

The begin their journey to the country-side, passing through a bazaar where one of the inmates (Shankar) steals a tiffin full of food.

Adnath discovers that they have stolen food and tell them to throw the food away. They all drop it, except for Shankar…

Shankar begins to walk away.

Adnath draws his gun, but stops himself. He convinces Shankar to drop the food.

After reaching the house in the country, it is late and they’re told to retire for the night. Shankar says that it’s time for them to be locked in. They’ve exchanged one prison for another.

The idea of freedom hits the convicts like a ton of bricks, and they don’t know what to do with it. They aren’t used to being treated as people.

Not able to sleep without shackles, they tie themselves together with ropes and axes.

Before they begin their first day preparing the land, Adnath sits them down for a prayer. The words speak to them, and they’re drawn in, though too proud to admit it.

After asking for their names, the convicts put their hands in coal, and their prints on a paper.

Adnath assigns them tasks in what I see as one of the most unintentionally hilarious scenes I have ever seen:

You beat someone to death with a hammer? Here – take this crowbar and carve out this well.

You hit your wife over the head with a large rock? Here – move these stones and start building a bridge.

You’re a barber who sliced and diced some of your new in-laws on your wedding night and have yet to be with your bride? Here – take this scythe and cut this grass.

You chopped up two children with an axe? Here – take this axe and remove these shrubs.

One of the convicts is given the task of fixing a fence, but it is viewed as ‘trading one prison for another’. Adnath hears this, and tears down the fence completely.

However, as a young woman selling toys passes by singing, the convicts lift the fence in front of them as to resist temptation. Eventually the young woman (Champa) becomes the one and only source of snarky feminism in the entire film (SHE WAS AWESOME).

Days pass, and Kisen is called aside.

Adnath had tracked down Kisen’s mother who has been taking care of Kisen’s children (since Kisen was in prison for killing his wife with a large rock). Kisen’s mother is old and losing her vision. They’re all worried about the welfare of the children.

Adnath is touched (as am I), and decides to take care of the children. Kisen is happy to be with his children. Champa promises Kisen’s mother that she will watch out for them.

However, the other convicts do not feel the same joy as everyone else…

So much that they even go as far as to plot to murder Adnath and run away.

They decide to have Dalia (the barber who sliced and diced some of his in-laws on his wedding night) slice Adnath’s throat while he shaves him.

Dalia’s conscience gets the better of him, and he can’t go through with it.

Adnath is crushed, and understandably so. He’s trusted these convicted murderers. He believed in them. He tried to help them. Treated them with respect and what does he get in return? A murder attempt.

He emotes. I’m sorry, I couldn’t resist showing the silent-film star part of him shining through.

He discovers that they have all run off. He’s crushed. He’s forced to report this to the police and the warden. The warden issues ’shoot on sight’ orders. While Adnath is crushed by the series of events, he still believes that they can be changed. He begs the warden to call off the ’shoot on sight’ orders.

The warden tells him that he would only do that if Adnath would write that his experiment failed, thus Adnath would be giving up everything he had and everything he believed in.

At first, he can’t do it. But his desire for non-violence wins out over his belief that he can still change them, and…

… He signs.

Now, this is where I got completely confused. I believe that there is a big scene missing here on this DVD. Because at one minute the convicts are on the run and Adnath is giving up his dignity and ideals, and the next…

… They’re all happy together singing about the rain and the warden comes by to see how the experiment is going! They give him flowers and everything. I thought for a while that maybe, somehow the bit with them trying to kill Adnath was mixed up and supposed to go near the end, but as the film went on I realized that I was very wrong.

Is this the most complete copy out there? I hope not. I hope that there’s a better edition out there I can buy that has the missing scene, because I really have no idea how they got from being on the run to singing about the freaking rain!

Anyway, it’s time for harvest. They get all the produce on a cart which Adnath plans to take to sell. The convicts convince Adnath to let them take them to the bazaar and sell them. Adnath agrees, and tells them to be back before nightfall.

Champa doesn’t have any faith in them. I just love Champa. She was fierce and never backed down.

At the bazaar, they’re hassled by the vegetable dealer. He buys produce from everyone else and declares himself the only one allowed to sell vegetables. They don’t buy it, but the vegetable dealer convinces them to go back to his place for some drinks.

This, of course, leads them to be out long after dark. There was a clock shown and I’m guessing that they finally showed up back at the house around 2am.

Adnath is not pleased that they’ve come back so late, and add to that – drunk. He tells them to sleep it off, and they head to the sleeping room, only to see Champa sleeping along the way.

They grab at Champa and all drunkenly try to force themselves on her. Champa tries to fend them off, but even she is not strong enough to fight off all six of them.

Adnath bursts in and beats them down with a large stick, and it’s almost a “What the fuck is wrong with you?” kind of moment. He returns to his room to cool off. His experiment is falling apart and he’s being brought to the edge.

The convicts aren’t done yet…

… And that’s where I’m going to stop. I don’t want to spoil the rest of the film for anyone. It’s a really touching film. I left out quite a bit from this large chunk of the film, mostly having to do with Champa being awesome. I love her, but I didn’t want to put up like 200 caps in this post. I had a helluva time deciding what to put up and what not to.

I will leave you with this fabulous musical number:

There were a few songs in this film, but only a few actually involve full out dancing. It’s not like a Bollywood film nowadays with six points in time where they just stop and dance. It’s more artistic and doesn’t disturb the flow in anyway.

I’d highly recommend this film. You should all see it, then report back here so we can try to figure out how they got from being on the run to singing about the rain.

Daddy Cool records pathetic collections at B.O.

Sunil Shetty, Aftab Shivdasani, Javed Jaffrey, Chunkey Pandey. Ashish Chowdhry, Aarti Chabbria, Kim Sharma, Tulip Joshi, Sophie Choudry, Suhasini Mulay, Prem Chopra and Rajpal Yadav starrer film Daddy Cool which is directed by K.Murli Mohan Rao has recorded pathetic collections at the box office.

The film is like an extended joke that goes on and on and doesn’t make you laugh at all. There is simply nothing cool about it! The makers of the film have already made it clear that it is an official remake of the British comedy Death at a Funeral but in trying to stick too close to the original, the humour doesn’t work every time. Better luck next time guys !!!

Salman Khan says he is serious about IPL

Mumbai: While the speculations about Salman Khan’s entry into the Indian Premier League (IPL) business, is on an all-time high, the actor himself said that he is seriously planning about it, but has not taken a final decision yet. Salman admitted that he never played cricket, but said he would become a good team owner, if he buys an IPL team. After holding talks with IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi, Salman Khan has showed interest to buy an IPL team during the IPL 4 in 2011. However, his brother Sohail Khan had refuted the claims, saying Salman did not have any such plans. Two new teams will be added to the IPL 4 in 2011.

Currently, three Bollywood celebrities are associated with the IPL. While Shah Rukh Khan owns the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Preity Zinta owns the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP). Shilpa Shetty owns a stake in Rajasthan Royals team.

Mann Ka Radio Hindi Lyrics

Hey !! Did i ever told that i am big fan of himesh.

So here I present the hindi lyrics of his new movie “radio” the song is “Mann ka Radio”.

I just loved this song.

—————————————————————–
