REVIEW: Ishqiya

“Aap ka ishq ishq hai aur mera ishq sex” – Arshad Warsi’s outburst seems to bring forth the essence of the entire story in one single line.

The film has multiple layers of emotions displayed at various levels and it takes a while to get a grip on the plot. Ishqiya starts with Krishna (Vidya Balan) in bed, clad in a bright red sari. For a fleeting moment she reminds us of Kareena Kapoor in Omkara.

Next we meet her husband, a small time goon, who is on the run from law. Krishna is madly in love with him and pesters him to ’surrender’. And before you could bat an eyelid – BOOM! There’s an explosion, of course.

Cut to the next scene. In some other part of the country, Babban (Arshad Warsi) and Khalujaan (Naseeruddin Shah) are seen enjoying a drinking and dancing. Their enjoyment is short-lived as Khalujaan’s mooh bola Jija ji tracks them down to extract the heist money from them. The duo somehow manages to fool him and run away with the booty and eventually land up at Krishna’s residence in Gorakhpur. They introduce themselves as her husband’s old friends and request Krishna to offer them shelter. Krishna obliges.

So far the story flows in a linear pattern as Babban and Khalujaan plan to cross the border to Nepal, while Krishna seems busy with her dairy business, domestic chores and singing. However, things don’t look as simple.

While Khalu, hailing from a family with music background falls for Krishna’s singing talent, and it seems for a while, Krishna too falls for him. And she doesn’t even try to hide her feelings. Meanwhile, the booty that Babban and Khalu fled away with disappears mysteriously.

We get enough hints to understand Krishna is not as docile as she pretends to be. The situation changes all of a sudden when Babban who has been lusting after Krishna for quite a while, snatches her from Khalu after a much-publicised smooch sequence. When the tables turn, things have already moved too far. A kidnap plan is hatched to raise money to pay off the creditors; events unravel in an unexpected manner and we are confronted with yet another twist in the tale.

It won’t be fair to unnecessarily compare Ishqiya with Omkara. As a first timer, Abhishek Chaubey’s direction is a welcome change. Though we find him losing his grip once in a while, Abhishek’s choice of the subject and handling of the same makes it a worth watch. The change of events during the kidnap drama and the heated argument that follows thereafter are fascinating. Even the passionate lovemaking sequence between Arshad and Vidya has been dexterously captured. The saucy lingo spit out by Babban and Khalu may make you feel uncomfortable, but it only makes the characters look more real.

Vishal Bhardwaj’s musical score has his unmistakable stamp all over. The songs, Ibn-e-Batuta and Dil To Bachcha Hai Ji are obviously the best picks of the album. One may be surprised to note the tune of Dil To Bachcha Hai Ji has an uncanny resemblance to Raj Kapoor’s Jeena Yahan, Marna Yahan from Mera Naam Joker.

Every actor in Ishqiya delivers a commendable performance. Vidya steals the show once again after Paa with her role as a scheming woman, two-timing the uncle and nephew without flinching once. Naseeruddin Shah is superb. Arshad packs in a great stint with his little bit of madness and crazy actions. Even the kid, who sticks around with Arshad, is natural.

VERDICT: High on drama and wild at times, you are bound to fall in love with Khalujaan and Babban.

RATING: 3.5/ 5

Bollywood to Screen First Homosexual Kiss

Artists: Kapil Sharma

Review: The following is an article about Bollywood’s first homosexual kiss. (Source: xinhuanet.com).

Come May and India’s popular Bollywood film industry will portray its first gay kiss in a commercial flick amid expected controversy and protests from conservatives in this country.

The film, titled “Dunno Y Na Jaane Kyun” is being made against the backdrop of a ruling of High Court in the national capital, which legalized homosexuality last year.

The two lead characters in the film are portrayed to be gay and the relationship between them is explicitly sexual.

In fact, the film would be depicting the relationship between two men with as much honesty as a heterosexual relationship, media reports said.

Director Sanjay Sharna’s simple logic is: “If it were a man and a woman, they would have shown it the way it is, so why not if it’ s two men? Well, they have a lot of faith in Indian audience which has matured after the amendment in Section 377. So, this will be well-timed we guess.”

Kapil Sharma, who plays a struggling actor, who “compromises his morals to get ahead in the film industry”, said in a recent interview that he initially struggled with the “sex scenes”.

“Though I was prepared mentally, when the shoot actually began, I got nervous about doing it in front of the camera. I was especially awkward in a gay party scene,” he was quoted as saying.

Despite its legalization, homosexuality is a taboo in India. And, the release of the film is expected to fuel controversy.

Manvendra Singh, one of India’s leading gay rights campaigners, has said that he believed the film will provoke protests when it is released, but he welcomed the debate it will open.

“There could be a backlash, but as long as it does not show vulgarity it will go some way to sensitizing the public,” he was quoted by local media as saying.

“It’s Bollywood’s answer to Hollywood’s Brokeback Mountain,” summed up Pawan Sharma, a film critic.

No Impact At Box Office

Shahid Kapoor and Ken Ghosh combo failed to deliver a super hit this time also. Their latest release Chance Pe Dance (2010) has received very poor reviews and bad openings. May be these are the lowest openings in Shahid Kapoor’s career in recent past.

Three Idiots and Avatar (2009) factor is also there on this movie. After such grand movies, people are not ready to accept an ordinary entertainer. Genelia D’Souza who played the female lead got very good craze. The  Every one praising her as next Preity Zinta because of her cute look and bubbly action.only person has benefits with this movie is Genelia D’Souza.

Movie Review: Pyaar Impossible (2010)

1 Star (out of 4)

Pyaar Impossible undermines its titular impossible love story with shallow characters.

Abhay (Uday Chopra) is a geeky software developer who still carries a torch for his college classmate, Alisha (Priyanka Chopra, no relation to Uday). He’s swindled out of a program he developed by a con man named “Sidhu,” played by Dino Morea, an actor unrivaled in his ability to grow a villainous mustache. The conman, whose real name is Varun, sells the program to Pinnacle Corporation.

Abhay sets up a meeting with Pinnacle’s PR officer in an attempt to get his program back and, wouldn’t you know, Alisha is the PR officer. Well, actually you wouldn’t, given Alisha’s wildly inappropriate office attire. Short shorts and a cleavage-baring top at work? Really?

After chickening out of the meeting, Abhay goes to confront Alisha at her home. Alisha mistakes him for the new nanny come to shepherd her demonic 6-year-old daughter, Tania. Abhay hides his true reason for coming over and agrees to serve as nanny.

They reach this unrealistic agreement using one of my least favorite movie conventions: Alisha won’t stop talking, so Abhay just goes along with whatever she says. With a simple, “Stop. That’s not why I’m here,” Abhay could’ve changed the entire trajectory of the film.

Pyaar Impossible proceeds to borrow liberally from any number of movies involving ill-equipped men caring for unruly children, including but not limited to the Hindi movie Thoda Pyaar, Thoda Magic and Hollywood films like The Pacifier, The Game Plan and all the Problem Child movies.

Little Tania lies somewhere between the kid from Problem Child and Damien from The Omen in terms of juvenile wilfulness. She delights in humiliating people, calling Abhay either “Froggy Four-Eyes” or “Stupid” and one of her grade-school classmates “Fatso”. This name-calling goes largely uncorrected by Abhay and Alisha, thereby undermining the movie’s argument that love is about more than looks.

The child’s use as a failed comedic plot device lies at the heart of Pyaar Impossible’s problem: poorly developed characters. Alisha is hopelessly self-centered, treating Abhay like a eunuch servant without ever considering that he might find her attractive, let alone be a suitable romantic partner for her. Given those huge character flaws, the only reason Abhay could be so in love with Alisha is because she’s beautiful, which, again, undermines the message of the movie.

Abhay professes to want Alisha to fall in love with him because of who he is, and not because of his devotion to her, but there’s nothing to Abhay apart from his devotion to her. A romance between Alisha and Abhay isn’t inspirational, just the next logical step for a self-absorbed woman and the doormat who loves her.

Just “3 Idiots” or really a billion of us!!!

Bollywood has perfected the art of taking a social cause, making a highly sentimental film on it, create a euphoria via media and rake in the moolah! Chapter closed. What happens with the cause itself is another story. Why bother about it and please do not ask difficult questions!

Take the case of Chak De, the SRK film blockbuster released on August 10th 2007 glorifying the Indian women hockey team winning the world championship. Big time money earner. Since we Indians can’t live that dream in reality ever again, one might as well enjoy it in a 2 hours or so neatly packaged melodrama and go hysterical.

Anyone cares for reality check? It’s 2010 and player of Indian Hockey Team have refused to practice for the upcoming world cup (being held at no other place but Delhi) as they have not been paid their dues since 2009. If you thought that these guys were earning million of $$s by playing hockey, here is a reality check. A player gets INR 25000/- (~$550/-) for playing a hockey match!!

Thanks to the public euphoria, producers and actors of Chak De possibly earned 10x from that one movie than our national team players will earn in their entire life!

Rang De Basanti was no different. Judgment of Ruchika’s molestation case stands as a testimony.

“3 Idiots” is the next sequel. It has all the ingredients to start a “euphoria tsunami”, such as valid middleclass social cause, sinusoidal emotions, an idealistic positive ending, some comedy and Aamir Khan. And there are a billion idiots willing to shell out money so that they can feel good by watching the movie and discussing the problem.

Someone else will fix it. If not, Bollywood will make another blockbuster on yet another social cause and then we can choose to forget “3 idiots” core issues.

After seeing “3 Idiots”, ask yourself the following question:-“If my son is a naturally talented hockey player and really wanted to build a career by playing hockey, what are my choices?”

The answer will tell you the futility of going gaga over 3 Idiots.

जैसे फिल्मों में होता हैं \ हो रहा हैं हूबहू|

A set of 3 songs from Bollywood movies with a common theme. The character, who is obviously madly in love, feels as if his/her life mirrors what usually happens in Bollywood movies: dancing in the rain, moonlight serenades, etc.

1. Woh Ladki Hain Kaha? – From Dil Chahta Hai.

2. Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte – From Rab Ne Banadi Jodi.

3. Finally, of course, the song from which the title is taken: Zoobi Doobi Zoobi Doobi – From 3 Idiots.

Note: Zoobi Doobi is only a promo as of now; I don’t think the full song is on youtube yet.

Of all the songs, I like Woh Ladki Hain Kahan the most, and Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte the least. Saif/Sonali was pretty cool way back in 2001, and the beat of the song is most refreshing. Zoobi Doobi is also pretty good! Aamir Khan now certainly holds the record for appearing in the highest number of songs containing words that rhyme with “Fubafu” – “Hubahu” from Zoobi Doobi and Rubaru from “Rubaroo” from Rubaroo (Rang de Basanti.)

Enjoy!

May the real idiots please stand up and STOP TWEETING on #3Idiots

Its just crazy how many people are talking about the 3 Idiots v. Five Point Someone controversy on Twitter. Everytime I see every Tom Dick and Harry on Twitter discussing any of these matters as if they are some kind of subject matter expert it makes me laugh so hard that I almost end up peeing in my pants.

What a bunch of morons are them including me. Because I too spent some time reading up the zillion expert comments, even tried arguing against a few of them.

At these times twitter seems to me to be this really big mental asylum where all the retards are just going about blabbering something and no one is listening. In just half an hour I saw 20 morons tweeting the link to the original contract between Vidhu Vinodh Chopra and Chetan Bhagat 20 times. I mean guys, when one of you have already tweeted it why do you have this itch to again repeat the action? Do you know who repeats action? Retards!

And its not like these 20 don’t follow each other so they dont’ know that its already tweeted. Of course they do. Some of them are even better, they tweet the same link @ me advising me to read it up when I had already tweeted about the contract and what’s in there myself just 4-5 tweets back. I mean how difficult it is to just do a background check before sending out a blabber.

Seriously guys, just get a life. This is so not an issue that should take up so much of our mindspace. Enough said. STOP IT ALREADY. I can’t even look at my twitter stream right now makes me sick.

Below are my share of idiotness, my tweets on the subject #3idiots

  1. @AaruC But why do you all care? As @vimoh put it best, they are doing this on a purpose and we are serving them. we are the real idiots
  2. @Nobribe And ppl like us on Twitter are suckers of such controversy, now may the real idiots please stand up, stop tweeting bout #3idiots
  3. @Nobribe True @vimoh #3idiots
  4. @Nobribe exactly why dont they just go to a court and get it sorted instead of blame gaming
  5. So much shit around #3idiots makes me not want to see the film. people behind cute faces are so flimsy, whiny and unethical
  6. @Nobribe Exactly. Its so dumb to now say that it is not based on FPS when they already agreed so in the contract and also paid consideration
  7. Who is this 4th Idiot now, what kind of joke are these, people are way too vella here. #3idiots
  8. @teemus The whole drama is about not properly implementing what was agreed in the contract, isn’t it?
  9. @teemus I think that slide show is quite pointless, 3 Idiots is based upon FPS, there’s no argument about it, same is accepted in contract
  10. ok i have totally missed everything why are people calling Chetan Bhagat a liar? what did he say? #3idiots
  11. Yaar proper credit dene mein kya jaata.. bacche ka dil dukhana zaroori tha? A nice fun movie, bekaar mein some negativity around it #3idiots
  12. Catching up with #3iditos controversy, cant believe it became such a big issue. whole world knew from the day it was launched that its based on FPS
